If you are looking for an economic, reliable and personal car rental company in Kenya, you should go to Drive East Africa. We hired a fully equipped 4x4 with rooftent. All of the struggles we had during our roadtrip have been solved immediately thanks to a straight forward communication. No hidden costs, no tricking or kidding! Drive East Africa also operates in other East African countries like Uganda or Tanzania, in case you plan to travel more than only Kenya. We really appreciated this unique experience!

My girlfriend and I we made a 3 week Camping roadtrip through whole Kenya. From Nairobi over Lake Naivasha and Nakuru to Iten in the highlands to Mt.Kenya then all the way to Amboseli ending up at the coast at Diani and Watamu to spend some days at the beach. It was an really adventurous trip but we could always rely on our spacious Toyota Prado and the personal contact we had with Kennedy. And in comparison to other car rental agencies it was quite affordable! So Drive East Africa it was really a pleasure!

We experienced many issues with Drive East Africa. First, they changed our car last second and gave us a car that was not good. The car had many issues, such as a bad air con that did not work and sprayed dirt on you when turned on, musty smell, bad gas efficiency, the car could barely go 60 kmh and woukd shake if you went over that, and bad windshield wipers so we could not see in the rain. Overall, the car was in poor condition. I would recommend going with another company for your self drive experience in Uganda.

Hired a landcruiser for our trip to Kenya, Kennedy met us at the airport as soon as our flight landed and the vehicle did exactly what we wanted it for, great for safaris and exploring the country and can’t thank Kennedy enough for this help.

My wife and i have just returned from a beautiful 2500 km ride from Queen Elizabeth park to Murchison Falls, Kidepo and Moroto down through Jinjia and then Entebbe. The excellent Toyota Prada 4x4 and the continuous assistance of the company allowed us to make a wonderful trip. The car has never given us any problems. I highly recommend this company to all travelers who want to experience the self drive in Uganda. roberto

We had the most wonderful experience in Uganda. It was a trip of a lifetime and Kenny from Drive East Africa made our experience so easy. His communication before the trip was amazing, always very quick to respond to any questions I had about the Gorilla / Chimpanzee trekking passes (which he also organized for us). The car was a Land Cruiser and it was very reliable on our 2500km+ journey, and camping inside the roof tent was comfortable with the additional bedding that was provided. I would recommend Drive East Africa in a heartbeat to anyone who was planning a trip to Uganda. Thank you for making our experience so unforgettable!

4x4 rental driving tips in Uganda

When driving in Uganda, be cautious and follow traffic laws and signals. Wear your seatbelt, watch for pedestrians and livestock on the road, and be prepared for varying road conditions. Unlike other countries, drivers need to yield to larger vehicles, use hand signals in certain places, and drive on the left side of the road. Knowing the lead driving customs and rules will help make your trip safe and enjoyable.

In Uganda, roundabouts are circular intersections that aid traffic flow in cities and towns by preventing congestion and enhancing safety. They are recognizable through circular painted lines on the road and a center island that divides the traffic lanes. When driving in a roundabout, Uganda drivers should yield to vehicles already within and signal when they intend to exit.

In Uganda, highways have a 100 km/h limit and urban/residential areas have a 50 km/h limit. Some highways may be 80 km/h and certain sections have a minimum of 50 km/h. Penalties for violating speed limits range from fines to imprisonment. Follow speed limits for safety and be aware of the current limit while driving defensively.

Car theft is rampant in Uganda, especially in cities like Kampala and Jinja. High-end vehicles are targeted, often sold illegally or used for other crimes. Despite increased police patrols and anti-theft measures, corruption and lack of resources make it challenging to address the problem. Car owners can install security features like alarms, tracking devices, immobilizers, and park in well-lit areas to reduce the risk. Drivers are advised to be alert to surroundings and avoid driving at night.

Fueling a car in Uganda is easy. There are plenty of fuel stations throughout the country, and the attendants are always willing to help you choose the best fuel for your car. Regardless of whether you are a local or a visitor, fueling your car in Uganda is a hassle-free process.
